Horrific forces are at work in the sleepy little town of Port Solace, Washington. Those who know the truth are either dead, or would prefer to forget. Aaron Williams is no different. This book gave me anything but sweet dreams.... at first I wasn't quite sure where it was taking me....but boy, did it take me in... Great prose, wonderful description of the characters...felt like I wanted to meet them and loved all the back stories until the exiting ending...a great first novel... I hope to read more.
I am not a writer so I will begin by quoting the author, S.R. Miller. One passage in his book seems to describe the way I felt about it better than I could express it myself. “Without fail [my] thoughts wandered back to this mysterious book of which [I] had become so frightened…curiosity was maddening, [My] desire to open it once more burning hot enough to keep [me] from any hope of falling asleep. [I] tried to push it away….shutting [my] eyes tight, but it was hopeless. The thoughts were ever present and undeniable. [I] had to get my hands on it again.”
This quote from the book’s main character, Aaron, as he considers an ancient book filled with terrible evil mirrored my sentiments as I read Sweet Dreams for Laura. I don’t read much horror, but I decided to read this and with each turn as the story grew more gruesome and twisted I would again consider if I really wanted to finish it – not because it wasn’t good or entertaining, but because I wasn’t sure I would have the stomach for it should it grow any darker. This book had it all – reanimated dead, ancient evil cults, creepy asylums, alternate twisted realities, an incredibly frightening and powerful villain, and a relatable hero who has to face all of it.
I would recommend this novel to any lover of the horror genre, but to the uninitiated like myself I will give the same advice Aaron received when confronted with a choice of whether or not to read a the book in the novel. “Please, don’t read it…Everything started when I read it…I don’t want it to happen to you too…something inside of me wants you to read it. I can feel it, and I don’t like it... I don’t want you to read it. Please.”
So consider yourself warned. You will likely have a few sleepless nights if you are drawn to the novel as I was.
When I first started the book, I was skeptical. Mr. Miller is a first timer, and once again, you should never judge before you read! This is one of the best books I've read in my life! I did not want to put it down! The characters are dynamic, you can relate to them and it keeps you wanting to know what will happen next. The books plot is a little twisted. It took me a bit to figure out where it was going, but that was good. I was looking at the book like "how is this related?" but then it hits you across the face! LOVE IT. Not to mention the nightmares, if you think this book is scary, you should probably finish it before you go to sleep! I would LOVE to see a movie come out of this one! S.R. Miller, you may be the Stephen King of our generation! KEEP WRITING!
